Big Science for Little Hands

In this workshop, you'll have the opportunity to try out a selection of hands-on science activities from the resource packages developed by Science World, with a special focus on the newest packages.  We'll share our experiences doing science with young children, and discuss how the activities might work in your setting.
Caregivers, parents and preschool educators provide many creative opportunities for young children to explore their world. That’s why Science World created Big Science for Little Hands, an evolving suite of free science resources for teachers and caregivers of 3–5 year-old children. Their aim is to develop activities that inspire further exploration and discovery.
Date:  Friday, December 4, 2009
Time: 12:30 – 3:00 pm
Location: Science World, 1455 Quebec St.

Learning through Tears:
Cultivating Resilience and Dealing withFrustration in Children

Facilitator:           Dr. Deborah MacNamara

One of the best-kept secrets regarding children under the age of 7 is that tears of sadness and disappointment are critical in helping them learn from all of the limits and frustrations they must encounter on a daily basis. Children must come up against numerous futilities in the first 5 years of life that will serve to build the foundation for resourcefulness and resilience in later years. Childcare professionals and educators  report increasing levels of frustration and aggression in children today and much can be done when one understands the root of frustration for children and the role of tears in this process. Stepping-in to help children take up a relationship with their frustrations is critical in ensuring their healthy development. Strategies for helping children find their tears as well as coping with frustration and aggression will be discussed.
Topics include:

- how children learn and adapt to limits and restrictions
- common childhood futilities
- the importance of tears and types of tears
- characteristics of the adaptive child
- keeping a child's heart soft
- working with stuck tears
- dealing with aggression

Dr. Deborah MacNamara has interned with Dr. Gordon Neufeld and provides leadership to the  Neufeld Institute. As a child educator and consultant Deborah's goal is to help parents, educators, and child care providers understand children from the inside out. Deborah teaches parenting classes, consults with families individually, and presents on a number of issues commonly faced in the care of young children and adolescents. Deborah is also the Mother of two young children putting the paradigm into practice in her everyday life. For more information see www.macnamara.ca.
